Authorities say the prosecuting attorney will decide whether to file charges in a fight early Monday between two men in Cabot that left one of them dead.

The Cabot Police Department says 24-year-old Steven Michael McCraw died after being struck repeatedly with a baseball bat during an altercation with 51-year-old Carl Roy Hambrick.

Hambrick told investigators McCraw about 1:20 a.m. knocked on the door of his home at 12 Carol Cove. After Hambrick opened the door, McCraw "began striking him about the head" with one or two objects, according to a police report released Tuesday.

Hambrick said he struck McCraw several times with the bat, continuing as "McCraw began to fall away from him outside the door," the report said.

Police say Hambrick stopped striking McCraw when he fell to his hands and knees but that McCraw then threatened to shoot Hambrick.

"[F]earing that McCraw had a gun on his person, [Hambrick] began striking him with the bat again until he stopped moving," the report said.

Authorities found McCraw on the floor with large amounts of blood coming from his head. He later died at North Metro Medical Center in Jacksonville.

Hambrick suffered a "severe laceration" on his left ear and other "minor to moderate" cuts on the back of his head, the report noted.

Sgt. Keith Graham said police will await the completion of the medical examiner's report before forwarding a case file to the prosecutor for review.
