New P.A.M. director to face vote in May

P.A.M. Transportation Services Inc. has added Norman Harned to its board of directors.

Harned is eligible to serve between now and the company's annual shareholders meeting May 29. At that meeting Harned will be presented to the company's stockholders as a candidate for the board and they'll have the option to vote him to the board for the remainder of the year.

Current board members of P.A.M., Transport Topics' 65th-rated for-hire carrier, selected Harned to serve on the company's audit committee. Harned replaces Frederick Calderone on the audit committee, though Calderone remains on the board.

P.A.M. stock ended trading Tuesday at $22.25 per share, down 13 cents from a day earlier. The company's annual shareholders meeting will be held this year in Detroit.

Fellowship program seeks entrepreneurs

A new program is available for students searching for entrepreneurial experiences after graduating from college.

The Arkansas Fellowship is backed by Winrock International, the Northwest Arkansas Council and the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce. The fellowship offers a two-year entrepreneurship immersion program and is based on the Orr Fellowship in Indiana. The goal of the program is developing the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders in Arkansas.

Those interested in the program may apply at arkansasfellowship.org. Applications are being accepted through Monday.

Successful applicants will be able to kick-start their careers through paid positions with top Arkansas companies. The program includes executive-level mentorship and the chance to build a network of business leaders, co-workers and peers. An annual salary of $40,000 is paid by the mentor company, with the possibility of additional benefits and bonuses at the company's discretion.

Some requirements include a minimum grade-point average of 3.0; having graduated from an Arkansas college or university or being a native Arkansan who graduated from an out-of-state school; and demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in entrepreneurship.

13 state stocks rise, take index to 334.53

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, climbed 1.99 to 334.53 Tuesday.

Thirteen stocks gained ground and four fell.

Shares of First Federal Bancshares rose 3.6 percent on average volume. Arkansas Best rose 2.8 percent in average trading. Acxiom advanced 2.6 percent on 80 percent of its average volume.

Shares of Bank of the Ozarks and Tyson Foods again hit 52-week highs.

Volume for the index was 18 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
