West Memphis man arrested in ’09 killing

West Memphis police said Thursday that they have in custody a 25-year-old man wanted in a nearly 5-year-old killing case.

Jessie James Washington of West Memphis was arrested Wednesday in the July 16, 2009, fatal shooting of Arthur Gregory, the West Memphis Police Department said.

Gregory, 18, was shot in his driveway on Cornell Street and died later that evening at The Med in Memphis.

At the time, West Memphis detectives had few leads, and while the investigation remained open, the case went cold, police said.

Recently, "new information came to light through witness statements and additional evidence," West Memphis police said without elaborating on what kind of information lent them a strong enough case to obtain arrest warrants.

Washington was found at 524 S. 15th St. in West Memphis and arrested on one count of capital murder and an unrelated probation-violation charge issued in Crittenden County Circuit Court, police said.

Washington is set to appear in West Memphis District Court on Friday morning.
