Arkansas’ high remediation rates signal a lack of cooperation between public schools and colleges, the head of the Southern Regional Education Board told lawmakers Wednesday in Little Rock. Mark Musick, president of the Atlanta-based board, said the already poor coordination will deteriorate if the state doesn’t get a better handle on education funding. The remediation rate in Arkansas colleges is about 58 percent, according to the Department of Higher Education. That means most students entering college must take additional courses to get ready for college-level work. Musick said it’s “just unacceptable that the faculty and the university staffs” aren’t more in touch with high schools, trying to find a way to make sure students are more prepared entering college.
