JONESBORO — Government officials in the Jonesboro area say icy weather during January is likely to blame for lower-than-expected sales tax collections.
Craighead County officials said their sales-tax revenue was off by 1.82 percent compared with January 2013. Inside the city of Jonesboro, sales-tax collections were off 2.65 percent.
Temperatures fell into the single-digits for part of the month. County Treasurer Terry McNatt and Jonesboro Chief Financial Officer Ben Barylske say that likely contributed to a downturn in revenue.
February's weather was bad, too. The finance officers told The Jonesboro Sun newspaper that sales-tax revenue will likely be down for last month.
