3 breast cancer warriors lauded for efforts in fight

Sharon Rejistre, Vicki Martin and Myrtle Hughes each accepted a Josetta Wilkins Award in a ceremony March 18 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute.

The awards are given on behalf of Breast Care and the Arkansas Department of Health to individuals and organizations that have made extraordinary efforts in the fight against breast cancer in Arkansas during the past year.

Rejistre accepted on behalf of Pink Orchid and Martin and Hughes received individual awards.

This year’s winners are the epitome of warriors, noted master of ceremonies Donna Terrell of KLRT-TV, Fox16, before the honorees were introduced.

Attendees included Dr. Appathurai Balamurugan, Dr. Rhonda Henry Tillman and Josetta Wilkins. The award was named for Wilkins, a former state legislator who ledthe effort for passage of the Breast Cancer Act of 1997. She also helped create the Breast-Care program, a division of the Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services. Breast Care provides women without health insurance free screening and treatment.

After the ceremony, guests were invited to a reception with punch and finger foods where they could mingle with the honorees.
