Lovin’ Lubin

Nice crowd helps toast birthday boy

“How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?” asked Aaron Lubin - a quotation he faithfully attributed to the Hall of Fame pitcher Leroy Robert “Satchel” Paige.

A crowd of a few hundred showed up at Pleasant Valley Country Club for the 70th birthday March 15 of Lubin, a past Rotary president. Among the attendees were pupils from Gibbs Magnet Elementary School, who sang a song for him. Lubin has been a mentor at Gibbs for almost 20 years. “Gibbs is not only one of the best schools in Little Rock but in the country,” he proclaimed.

Guests dined on lox and other cold meats, vegetables, bruschetta, and artichoke and spinach dip. Throughout, a slide show of Lubin’s life played on a big screen, and there was a poster of a portrait taken of him when he ran for chairman of “49er Days” at California State University in Long Beach.

His campaign slogan: Vote for Luvable Lubin.

The afternoon was largely orchestrated by Lubin’s wife, Sandie, to whom he has been married for 25 years. He had these words of appreciation for her: “She’s my partner, my spouse, my mentor, my friend, and Sandie, I love your spirit, your way of looking at life.”
