Motive unclear in shooting of 20-month-old, two adults

The motive remains unknown in a shooting that killed a woman and injured a man and a 20-month-old child Wednesday in Garland County, authorities said Thursday.

It happened about 5 p.m. at an apartment complex at 200 Springwood Road outside Hot Springs.

Mayela Mata, 26, and a man whose identity has not been released were taken to a Hot Springs hospital, where Mata died and the man was treated and released, sheriff's office Lt. James Martin said in an email.

The infant was airlifted to a Little Rock hospital in stable-but-critical condition. Martin said he did not have an update on the condition of the child Thursday.

No arrests have been made and no information is known on a suspect or the motive, Martin added. He said Wednesday that details were then "extremely sketchy at best" but that investigators thought they had found a vehicle used by the shooter.
