Benton police offer amnesty for misdemeanor warrants

The Benton Police Department this month will offer amnesty to those with misdemeanor warrants if the offenders turn themselves in.

Police spokesman Lt. Kevin Russell said in a statement Friday that the department has over 1,500 warrants in its system and the May initiative will help cut down on the backlog.

The initiative will allow anyone who turns themselves in the opportunity to not go to jail and work on rescheduling payments on their warrant, Russell said in the news release.

The amnesty only will apply to those who turn themselves in; if offenders are caught by officers, they will still go to jail, according to Russell.

More information about the amnesty program is available by calling the Benton Police Department at (501) 776-5948 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
