Records: Bookout wrote checks to himself, family

JONESBORO — Bank records released by the Arkansas Ethics Commission show former state Sen. Paul Bookout wrote thousands of dollars in checks from his 2010 campaign fund to himself and to family members.

Bookout, a Democrat, resigned from the Senate in August after the commission found that he spent money from his 2012 re-election campaign fund on dozens of personal items. The commission released Bookout's 2010 bank statements Friday.

The Jonesboro Sun reported that Bookout wrote himself at least $6,100 in checks from the campaign fund during the 2010 campaign.

Bookout could not be reached for comment. He signed a consent order in early April in which he agreed that he violated state law by using 2010 campaign and carry-over funds to make payments not related to his campaign.
