BITTERSWEET EVENT

First Lady’s Tea a farewell to yearly hosting

It was a bit of a bittersweet First Lady’s Tea, held April 27 in the Grand Hall of the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion. The event was the sixth and last to be hosted by Ginger Beebe, whose husband, Gov. Mike Beebe, leaves office in January.

Luckily, the sweet overshadowed the bitter. Decorations, created by the Governor’s Mansion Association Tea Committee, featured tables swathed in cheerful lilac, pink and aqua. Guests, many of whom were children, donned festive spring dresses and hats with white gloves and enjoyed tea sandwiches, lemon scones with clotted cream and butter, assorted macaroons, and chocolate pecan truffles along with Lady Grey, Tangerine White and Wild Sweet Orange teas. Each attendee also received a package of zinnia seeds as a token gift.

During her brief remarks, Beebe reiterated the purpose of the event - “getting together, wearing your finest and just enjoying tea … with your friends.” Afterward, the girls were treated to a “history hunt” around the mansion, after which they received goody bags.

Event proceeds fund the Governor’s Mansion Association.
