Century Farm program seeks applicants

Applications are still being taken for the Arkansas Century Farm program, which honors families who have owned and farmed the same land for at least 100 years.

The Arkansas Department of Agriculture is accepting applications postmarked by May 31, according to a release Monday.

Since the program began in 2012, 185 farms have been certified Arkansas Century Farms. Qualified applicants will be given a personalized metal sign and a certificate.

To qualify, the same family must have owned the farm since at least Dec. 31, 1914. Ownership may be traced through the original settler or buyer through children, grandchildren, siblings, and nephews or nieces, through marriage or adoption. The farm must contain 10 acres or more of the original land and make a contribution to overall farm income.

Applications must come from the legal owners of the land and can be obtained from the Arkansas Agricultural Department by calling (501) 683-4851 or from the department’s website. Applications must be postmarked by May 31 to be eligible for designation in 2014.
