Big Bass Bonanza shaping up, organizers say

LITTLE ROCK — Organizers say conditions are shaping up favorably on the Arkansas River for next month's Big Bass Bonanza.

The amateur fishing tournament draws about 2,000 anglers each year. They compete for a $50,000 first prize and numerous smaller awards. The 2014 edition is set for June 27-29.

Professional fishermen aren't eligible to enter.

The length of the river is divided into five pools, each with their own weigh-in sites, but anglers aren't restricted to any one pool.

The tournament is organized by the Arkansas Hospitality Association and the Game and Fish Commission. Entry fees are $80 per day for contestants who register by June 11, after which the fee is $90.

The bulk of entry fees are paid as prizes, and sponsors help cover some tournament costs.
