Paid lien, says House hopeful

Another in District 36 plans to take care of 2 this month

One candidate for state House District 36 with a lien filed against him said he paid it off Wednesday, and another said she plans to pay off a lien this month.

Two of the three Democratic candidates for the state representative seat in the district that covers south and central Pulaski County, Charles Blake and Sheena Lewis, had liens placed against them.

Blake, 31, owed $2,071 after a district judge placed a lien against him in a 2013 civil judgment after he defaulted on an Arkansas Education Association Credit Union car loan.

Blake said he had been paying on the amount for months.

On Wednesday, he said he was paying it off that day. He sent the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette a memorandum from an attorney at Grisham Law Firm saying the matter was "satisfied."

Lewis, 32, said she was unaware of her two liensr until April, when a Democrat-Gazette reporter informed her of them. Notices had been sent to an address she has not lived at for years.

The Arkansas Department of Workforce Services overpaid unemployment benefits to Lewis, resulting in the lien filings in 2008 and 2012.

Lewis later provided a receipt showing that the department had collected a portion of those overpayments in previous years and that a balance of $497.24 remained.

On Wednesday, Lewis said she planned to pay the liens by the end of the month. She said she hadn't paid the balance yet because she only had found out about it so recently.

Lewis and Blake face Rodney Hall in the Democratic primary for the seat being vacated by term-limited Rep. Darrin Williams, D-Little Rock.

The race has drawn no Republican opponents, and the winner of the May primary will take the seat next year.
