Gala for Life kickoff event turns all eyes on September

A beautiful new farmhouse in an idyllic west Little Rock setting was the backdrop for the 2014 kickoff reception for Gala for Life, the annual major fundraiser for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.

Held April 30, the reception was hosted by past gala co-chairmen Christy and William Clark. Forthcoming co-chairmen Denise and Dr. Hershey Garner of Fayetteville, along with Carla and institute director Dr. Peter Emanuel, joined the Clarks in greeting guests. Heavy hors d'oeuvres -- from grilled shrimp kebabs to chocolate-dipped strawberries -- were provided by RSVP Catering.

During an informal program, William Clark noted that his wife has nearly reached the six-year mark as a breast cancer survivor. Emanuel then introduced the Garners as the first out-of-town chairmen to "drum up interest and support for our gala." Emanuel also shared details about the gala, which will be held Sept. 26 and will honor Ginger and Gov. Mike Beebe, and the programs it will benefit. Its proceeds will finance research and enhanced treatment of bone and soft-tissue tumors.

Remarks by the Garners included the doctor mentioning being a 12-year cancer survivor.
