Junior League of Little Rock honors sustainer Cindy Feltus

The thousand-strong collection of women who comprise the Junior League of Little Rock are a force. It stands to reason that the sustainers -- women who have "graduated" from the league but stay involved -- are an equal and parallel force.

Each spring the league hosts a sustainers lunch that honors one particular sustainer, and this year it was Cindy Feltus' turn.

Feltus is a rare exhibitor of "zany extroversion" and "wise encouragement," said her minister, Karen Akin of Second Presbyterian Church. She is the living example of the Dag Hammarskjold line, "For all that has been, thanks; to all that will be, yes."

Several fans and contemporaries held up giant cutouts of Feltus' face for the honoree's shock and amusement.

Of her evolving place within the league, Feltus told the crowd, "I wanted to be one of those Junior League greats" before she joined, "I wanted to be in their presence," and when she'd finished, "I wanted to leave it in great hands."

Feltus was instrumental in the league's ongoing Building a Legacy capital campaign that has raised $850,000 for repairs to the parking lot of the former Woman's City Club Building that's now its headquarters and renovation of the uppermost floor. Construction will begin this summer.

The lunch menu included several recipes from past league cookbooks, including Feltus' recipe for chicken breasts in mushroom sauce (Traditions, page 249), Diane's rice pilaf (Little Rock Cooks, page 209) and Anne Hickman's mimosas ( Little Rock Cooks, page 30).
