Same-sex marriage licenses issued in Fayetteville

By The Associated Press

This article was published May 12, 2014 at 9:22 a.m.

FAYETTEVILLE — Washington County has begun issuing wedding licenses to same-sex couples after a circuit judge in Pulaski County overturned the state's constitutional ban on gay marriage.

Washington County Clerk Becky Lewallen said 23 licenses were issued Monday morning to same-sex couples. Another license was issued to a heterosexual couple Monday morning as well.

Couples began lining up before the courthouse opened Monday, with one couple arriving at 2:30 a.m. Many couples immediately wed outside the courthouse after receiving the licenses.

The crowds cleared out after about 30 minutes Monday morning.

Washington, Pulaski and Carroll counties are now issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Several counties have refused to do so, saying the Arkansas Supreme Court must weigh in.

One of the main reasons why the State bestows numerous benefits on marriage is that by its very nature and design, marriage provides the normal conditions for a stable, affectionate, and moral atmosphere that is beneficial to the upbringing of children—all fruit of the mutual affection of the parents. This aids in perpetuating the nation and strengthening society, an evident interest of the State.

Homosexual “marriage” does not provide such conditions. Its primary purpose, objectively speaking, is the personal gratification of two individuals whose union is sterile by nature. It is not entitled, therefore, to the protection the State extends to true marriage.

In the first place, your comments do not even approach objectivity. Secondly, sterile heterosexual couples would fall under the same classification as homosexual couples, based upon your classification, i.e. no entitlement to marry. Third, like heterosexual woman, homosexual woman can undergo IVF and other procedures to conceive and bear children. Fourth, like heterosexual couples and single parents, homosexual couples can adopt and provide a loving, stable home for children. Thus, even given your limited view of marriage, homosexual couples would meet the criteria.

Are you confusing moral right with legal right?
Sad day for Arkansas. No good can come of this.

Pops......when it comes to CIVIL marriage, "legal" is what is legal tender, not anyone's backward, discriminatory, uncompassionate, ancient, superstition-based, narrow interpretation of what is "moral". I don't empty threats such as you made are moral, but under freedom of speech we have to put up with them....and under due process, you have to put up with equal marital rights for American citizens.
