Style: One for the books

Earlier this year, in Siloam Springs, the city’s board of directors discussed an ordinance that would make not returning a library book a civil infraction punishable by up to $500, Bobby Ampezzan writes in Tuesday’s Style section.

One director said the ordinance would finally give the library some “teeth.” Another said it’s more than teeth — an overdue library book isn’t a crime. Eventually, on the third reading, the motion was tabled. A new ordinance capping the penalty at a $350 fine was proposed and tabled until June.

“It is quite the hot topic for some reason,” Holland Hayden, the city’s communications director says.
