Deacon SETROY BATTLE, 93, formerly of Elgin (Jackson County), Arkansas passed away on May 10, 2014. He was born September 4, 1920 to the late Ruben and Maggie Battle. He accepted Christ as his savior at an early age and joined New Hope Baptist Church in Tuckerman, Arkansas.

A veteran of World War II, Setroy proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of the famous “Red Ball Express,” credited historically as the trucking convoy system whose valuable contributions made possible the Allied victory in Europe.

He leaves to cherish his life his children: Elder Dr. Hayward (Mamie) Battle, Sr., Reva Lee (Stanley) O’Connor, Stephanie Rena Lake and Petra Joy Mcgahee; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

•–––––MICHAEL GLENN GATELY of Little Rock, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Michael was born on November 5, 1956 in Fort Smith, Ark. Michael worked for Windstream for over 30 years and was owner and operator of Mayflower Mini Storage. He loved to fish and enjoyed the Razorbacks.

Michael is survived by his loving wife of over 20 years, Susan; one stepson, Todd Pevey (Andrea); one stepdaughter, Bonnie Dahmani ( Yasser); three grandchildren, Brittany Hogue, Lacey Dahmani and Hannaha Pevey; one sister, Lisa Wedel (Jeff); three brothers, Dr. Stan Gately (Suzanne), Steve Gately (Lana), Neil Gately (Bridgett). He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Nancy Gately.

•–––––ALINE NICHOLSON LEWIS born in Damascus Arkansas October 26, 1919, died May 9th, 2014. She was a longtime member of Church of Christ. For more than 30 years she and Jimmy owned and operated Jimmy Lewis Grocery in Damascus, Arkansas.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, James Carson Lewis; parents, Adam Guthery and Blanch Lee Nicholson; her brother, Earl Nicholson. •–––––JERRY PATRICK SCREETON, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran, passed peacefully to Our Father on May 10, 2014. As a 21-year retired Army Master Seargent, the lives he influenced are innumerable. Jerry is rejoined in heaven with his mother, father and three brothers. Jerry’s two surviving sisters, Mary Lou Hairell and Frankie Bidwell, rejoice in this reunion.

Agnes Screeton, his loving wife of 27 years and mother of four children, preceded Jerry to heaven in 2001. Their son, Jerry Patrick Screeton Junior, preceded both in 1993. Mary Screeton, his second wife of 20 years, also awaited his return. His daughters, Sherry Love, Lynn Screeton and Susan Screeton celebrate this occasion on Earth. As a grandfather of five and great-grandfather of 14, his legacy will carry forward for generations.

Many, many personal friends will continue to cherish his loving memory. Services will be held on Friday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at the military cemetery at 1501 W Maryland Ave, North Little Rock.

•–––––BEE BRANCH — Barbara Jean Newcomb 73, of Bee Branch, Arkansas went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 13, 2014. she was born August 12, 1940 in Marion, Arkansas to the late William Earl and Elizabeth Rose (Ruby) (Wallace) Padgett.

Barbara was a devoted wife, loving mother, and grandmother who never hesitated to give her all to the ones she so deeply loved. She was an extremely talented artist, painter, and photographer. She spent many hours tracing her family geneology. She also was a Girl Scout Leader, Boy Scout Leader, and a Hunters Education Instructor for many years, she always found ways to give back to her community.

She loved the Lord like no other and attended church at First Assembly of God in Clinton, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Billy Gene Newcomb, brothers, William Gray (Bud) Padgett, and Robert Earl Padgett. She is survived by her children, Billy Gene and Christina Newcomb, Jr. of Bee Branch, Ark.; Bennie and Tauny Newcomb of Bee Branch, Ark.; Jeanie Marie and Bryan Duncan of Choctaw, Ark.; Angela Rose Clark of Conway, Ark.; Tammy Lee Darlene and Thomas Davis of Drasco, Ark.; and Cynthia Walley Newcomb, 21 grandchildren, and Jacob Levi Murphy Newcomb, 35 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, Braiden Goff and many close friends and relatives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Melvin King, Sr. and Raymond Gardner; one son, Melvin Loyd King, Jr.; two sisters, Lillie White and Mary Tyler and a brother, Frankie Rankin.

Mrs. Gardner is survived by a son, Milton Thomas King of Cabot; seven brothers and sisters, Brenda King, Cleo Wilhite, Ruby Smothers, John Jay Stain, Ricky Stain, Knotley Ovid Stain, Jr. and Charles Wayne Stain; three grandchildren, Gabriel Thomas King, Jonnie Griffith Wheatley and Karissa Fawn Jackson; two great-grandchildren, Christian Wayne Jackson and Cydney Desha Jackson and a host of nieces and nephews.

•–––––CABOT — Mary Ellen Goforth, 81, of Cabot died Tuesday, May 13, 2014. She was born July 19, 1929 in Cabot to the late Oscar and Lecta Greer Peeler. Mrs. Goforth was the secretary and a member of Park Hill Baptist Church for many years. She also worked as a bookkeeper.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Goforth was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Goforth. Mrs. Goforth is survived by her daughter, Harolette Goforth of Cabot, two sistersin-law, one brother-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by mother, Pauline Conner; father William E. Conner; sisters, Nettie Autry and Barbara Jacobs. He is survived by wife Betty Joan Conner; six children, C.W. Conner and wife Denise, Susan Landers and husband Dan, Curtis Conner and wife Karen, Clint Conner and wife Teresa, Belinda Dunlap and husband Joe, and Clifton Conner; 16 grandchildren, Christian Dutton, Kim McAdams, Sydney Conner, Brecklin, Garrett and Cristina Conner, Amanda Chin, Jeremy Bryant, Joseph Conner, Brandie Yarbrough, Stephanie Galliton, Jennifer Beavers and Kasey Gioletti; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bettie Simpson.

Coleman was a loving father and husband who loved God and had a sense of humor. He was a Navy veteran and loved to work in food ministries and to help send young people to church camp. He had a passion for ministry to shut-ins.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Argyle “Sonny” Hopkins; daughter, Kimberly Stubbs and husband Robert, daughter, Rebecca Rupert and husband Chad; five grandchildren, Bethany, Matthew, and Hannah Stubbs, Shelby and Luke Rupert; her mother, Mary Alice McDonald; sister, Sarah Wallace-King; brother, Pat McDonald; niece, Amanda Howard and husband Daniel; nephews, John, and wife Sarah, Michael, and David, and niece, Courtney.

•–––––CONWAY — Sandra I. Breier Williford, 65, of Conway, Ark. passed from this life to go perform on her heavenly stage on May 12, 2014. She was born the daughter of Matthew and Nancy Breier in New Orleans, La., on August 16, 1948. Sandra was a retired Mental Health and Recovery Professional with a Master’s of Science, LPC, CADC, and a Director for UAMS Cares, and her private Psychotherapy practice. She was also well known as an accomplished entertainer and recipient of the Eugene O’Neill Award for her part as Gladys in “The Pajama Game”. She devoted her life to her music, work, and loving family.

Sandra is survived by her loving husband, John Williford of 43 years; one daughter, Shana Dawn Williford Edmond (Joshua); one son, Larry James Budow; four grandchildren, Moss Edmond, Dusty Buder Jr., Samson Pikey, Charlie Budow; and one sister, Cher of Sacramento, Calif.

•–––––FORDYCE — Mattie Lou Mann Cone of Fordyce died Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the age of 92. She was born December 28, 1921 in Pine Grove, Ark., to the late Walter Raney Mann and Ella Barnes Mann.

Mattie first moved to the Dallas County seat of Fordyce in 1941 and began working in the Clerk of Court’s office as clerk and secretary then at the Ration Board through 1943. Residing for a time in Thornton, she continued working in office management or bookkeeping for various local companies before joining Phelps Dodge Communications Company where she retired in 1983. She was a longtime member and devoted president for many years leading the local chapter of the national Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Among many hobbies was traveling with family and friends, watching and recording statistics for basketball as well as football. She loved tending her flowerbeds and playing games like Rumykube, Rook, or dominos. In her youth Mattie played piano at revivals as her brothers sang and later for family gatherings.

Mattie is survived by her nieces, Patsy Johnson of Sherwood, Ark., and Barbara Bridges of Jena, La.; grand-nieces and nephews, Elsie Meaux and Vicky Branton of Lafayette, La.; Jill Drake of Star City and Gary Langley of Harmony Grove; Larry Johnson of Maumelle and Bobby Johnson of Sherwood, Steven Johnson of Dallas, Texas, and Nita Deville of Benton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Bill Cone; siblings Earl, Fred, and Vyrah Mann and Ada Kirkland; and nieces Nancy Hodnett and Earlene Branton.

•–––––SHERIDAN — Katy Sue Tull, 74, of Sheridan, Ark. went to be with the Lord on May 11, 2014. She was born on June 19, 1939 to Ollie and Katherine Brown in Little Rock, Ark. Katy was an IBM Operator for Arkla Gas for 15 years, then moved to Detroit, Michigan where she married her late husband, Chuck Tull, and was a housewife, mother and grandmother. In 2008, she moved back to Arkansas and resided in Sheridan with her daughters and other loved ones.

Katy is preceded in death by her parents, Ollie Burton and Katherine Brown; late husband Chuck Tull; son, Ronnie Trusley; granddaughter, Rebecca Trusley, brother, Ollie Burton (Butch) Brown Jr., and sister, Betty Jean Chism. Katy is survived by two daughters, Vicki Lynn Matthews of Sheridan and Dorothy Elizabeth Matthews of Mabelvale; eight grandchildren: Rhonda Kay, Jimmy, Josh, Melissa, Ricky, Joseph, William, and Jackie; 11 great-grandchildren: Baylee, Jalisa, Anthony, Terrell, Takayla, Dewayne, C.J., Nia, Desire’, William, Tahanna; daughter-in-law Brenda; four sisters: Cynthia (James) Harris, Ollie Smith, Sherry Bisbee, Mari Bea (Rick) Sorrows; and a host of family and friends who will miss her and loved her dearly.

To know Katy was to love her. She helped many children and families while in Detroit and always had her door and heart open to everyone. Katy loved her children, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than life itself. •–––––STUTTGART — Mrs. Mabel Montine Moseley, 97, of Stuttgart, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014 in Wynne, Arkansas at Southern Independent Living. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ned Moseley in 1999; parents, Charles and Ora Lee Brock Bowman;

She was born in Moro, Arkansas on May 6, 1917, the 2nd of eight girls. She married Ned Moseley, June 24, 1936 and were married 63 years. Mabel received her BA from Arkansas A&M at Monticello and her BSLS from George Peabody College in association with Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. She was a teacher and librarian for over 40 years, mostly spent in Stuttgart, McGehee and Clarendon as well as Hamburg, Warren and Corning. She was an original member of the “Committee of One Hundred” serving to preserve Arkansas’ Ozark heritage and promote the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society. After retirement, she was active in her community, including volunteer work at the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie and continued promoting higher education. She provided scholarships for deserving Stuttgart High School students for several years. Mabel and Ned both were dedicated to the education of generations.

Survivors are her son, Charles Moseley of Wynne; sister, Doris Keasler of Marianna; grandchildren, Chris and Karen Moseley and daughter, Bess of Allen, Texas; Heather Jones and sons, Joshua and Austin of Conway, Arkansas; Win Moseley of Blytheville, Arkansas.

Memorials may be made to Grand Avenue United Methodist Church and Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie. Funeral services will be at Grand Avenue Methodist Church in Stuttgart at 10:30 a.m. with burial in Moseley Cemetery at 2:30 in Warren, Arkansas.
