Conway County to issue marriage licenses for gays

The Conway County clerk says her office will begin issuing marriage licenses to gay couples after a judge paved the way for clerks to start granting them.

Conway County Clerk Debbie Hartman said Friday that her office will begin issuing marriage licenses out to same-sex couples who are seeking them. Earlier in the week, Hartman said her office would not issue the licenses. Judge Chris Piazza cleared the way Thursday for clerks to distribute them after striking down a law that says they couldn't for gay couples.

Piazza also overturned a state ban on gay marriages in a lawsuit last week. Conway County is one of six counties who were named that lawsuit. The other counties are Lonoke, Pulaski, Saline, Washington and White.
