An Illinois man died Thursday on Interstate 40 when his motorcycle crashed into the back of a vehicle stopped in front of him, authorities said.

It happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. near the Lonoke exit at mile marker 175.

Arkansas State Police say 75-year-old Wendell E. Ely of Olney, Ill., was riding a 1984 Honda Trike motorcycle west on the highway when it hit the back of a 2008 Dodge that had stopped in traffic in the slow lane.

Ely was thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the lane, according to an accident report. He suffered fatal injuries.

The Dodge driver was not hurt.

The death was the 126th fatality in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
