Belles fight back from a 2-0 deficit

BENTONVILLE — Mount St. Mary refused to stay down after falling behind Friday.

The Belles rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Springdale Har-Ber 3-2 in the Class 7A girls state soccer tournament at Tiger Athletic Complex.

Har-Ber grabbed a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Vanessa Reynoso and Adeline Williams just over six minutes into the game, but Mount St. Mary had tied the game by halftime and took the lead on a goal by Mackenzie Gordon with 2:54 to play.

Mount St. Mary Coach Brian Clark said he wasn’t overly concerned after his team fell behind 2-0.

“That’s the way it’s been all year,” Clark said. “We play great soccer sometimes, but not our best soccer. When we got behind, I just asked the girls to play from the heart. That’s what they did.”

The victory moves Mount St. Mary (14-3-1) into today’s semifinals against Bentonville.

Friday’s loss ended a fourgame winning streak for Har-Ber (10-7-1), which posted its third consecutive shutout with a 1-0 victory over Conway on Thursday. The Lady Wildcats had a handful of opportunities to pad their lead Friday but couldn’t convert.

Mount St. Mary began its comeback when Kristen Howell’s shot trickled past goalie Madeline Slaton, who was sprawled out on the ground during a save attempt. The Belles tied the game 2-2 on a goal by Morgan Payne with 12:11 left before halftime.
