Traffic is moving slowly on Interstate 40 toward Memphis because of a tractor-trailer accident Saturday, officials say.

The accident occurred around mile marker 258 on Interstate 40 near Forrest City, Arkansas Department of Highway and Transportation spokesman Randy Ort said.

Bill Sadler, spokesman for the Arkansas State Police, said officers responded to a call at 7:04 a.m. about the accident near Shell Lake.

The tractor-trailer, headed eastbound, was carrying hazardous materials when ran into the interstate median and slammed under a westbound bridge on I-40, he said.

"There was a fire, but I don't know how much damage," Ort said. "From my understanding, this is a non-fatality accident."

A bridge inspection crew is on its way to the accident scene, and traffic on westbound lanes on I-40 is currently being redirected from mile marker 265 to U.S. 70, onto mile marker 256 westbound.

"The westbound lanes will be closed for an indefinite period of time," Ort said.

Sadler said the westbound lanes are expected to open at about 6 p.m. Saturday.
