Second thoughts

Kitty letter idea really outside box

Give the football coaches at Rice University credit.

Those cats are smart.

“This will always remind me of the full-body search I’m about to get.”

Rice coaches made quite an impression on Houston Kinkaid quarterback J.T. Granato when they recently sent a recruiting letter addressed to Kitty Granato, the three-star quarterback's cat.

That's right. They sent it to the kid's cat.

According to Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle, Rice co-offensive coordinator Billy Lynch made his best pitch in the letter addressed to the cat, whose actual name is White Sox.

"As you know we're trying to convince J.T. Rice is the place for him," the letter read. "I know you'd like to keep him close so he can feed you and change the litter box. Please help us to get him to choose us. Paw me if you have any questions."

Apparently, the cat was convinced.

Granato, who threw for more than 3,000 yards and 42 touchdowns last season while leading Kinkaid to a conference title, orally committed to Rice on Thursday.

That's a relief

Kyle Larson is all about being prepared.

That's why the 21-year-old NASCAR driver has been working out for the Coca-Cola 600, the longest race of the Sprint Cup season.

Larson claims that unlike many drivers, he has never had to relieve himself in his firesuit during a race, and he said this week that he has no intentions of breaking that streak in the 600-mile race next Sunday.

"I've been working my bladder out, trying to increase the size," Larson said. "I've been working on holding it and not going to the bathroom for several hours. I'm trying to build up my stamina."

A glowing example

A high school football coach in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., has been arrested after authorities say he stole money from students' wallets.

Volusia County sheriff's officials told The Associated Press they used invisible luminescent powder sprinkled on decoy money to catch the coach, Rodney Barnes. Officials said nine students lost $950, but that amount could grow as the investigation continues.

After several thefts in the boys' locker room, the school bought an ultraviolet theft detection kit and the sheriff's office launched "Operation Sticky Fingers." A student was given a wallet containing $141, and each bill was coated with luminescent powder.

After some of the money was taken, officials searched students for traces of the powder. Barnes, 43, eventually admitted to taking the money and confessed to several other thefts. He faces burglary and grand theft charges.

Losing out

The Chicago Cubs recently became the third team in major-league history to record 10,000 losses, joining the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves.

"The poor Cubs," Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon said. "They can't even win a losing contest."
