Travs hit 5 HRs, smash Cardinals

The Arkansas Travelers are a different team when they play the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.

At least when it comes to hitting home runs.

The Travelers, who came into Sunday's game having hit 17 home runs in 41 games, hit five against the Cardinals in a 9-3 victory before an announced crowd of 3,946.

That's 10 home runs in seven games at Hammons Field this season, including a three home-run game in an 11-3 victory April 20.

The Travs have hit 12 home runs in their other 34 games, including three in 21 games at Dickey Stephens Park in North Little Rock.

Three of Sunday's home runs -- by Brian Hernandez (fifth inning), Zach Borenstein (seventh inning) and Andy Workman (eighth) -- came with no runners on base.

But it was Jett Bandy's three-run home to left field in the fourth inning that gave the Travelers a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish.

Alex Yarbrough added a two-run home run in the seventh.

Bandy's shot came off Springfield starter and eventual loser Seth Blair (3-3)

Hernandez homered to left field in the fifth inning to make it 5-0 after Yarbrough doubled in Kyle Hudson, but was thrown out at third trying to stretch it to a triple.

Borenstein's home run in the seventh came right after the home run by Yarbrough and made it 8-1.

Workman led off the eighth inning with a home run on the first pitch to make it 9-1 before Springfield scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to set the final score.

Yarbrough led the Travelers by going 3 for 5. Hernandez went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Bandy went 1 for 4 with 3 RBI.

Michael Roth (2-3) allowed 1 run on 5 hits in 7 innings with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks to get the victory for the Travelers.

David Popkins and Patrick Wisdom led the Cardinals by going 2 for 3 and scored 1 run.

Blair allowed 6 run on 7 hits in 6 1/3 innings and gave up 2 home runs with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks. Anthony Feriara allowed 3 home runs in 1 2/3 innings in relief.
