State police to honor Trooper of Year

A ceremony is planned in Little Rock for Arkansas State Police to hand out awards to its top employees of the year.

The event is planned for 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Embassy Suites in west Little Rock. The agency will hand out awards including the Arkansas State Trooper of the Year, the Medal of Valor, the Trooper's Cross and the award for Distinguished Meritorious Service.

Last year, Cpl. Pete Penney of Nashville won Trooper of the Year and the Medal of Valor. Penney was honored for his actions during a March 2012 traffic stop in Hempstead County. Penney was shot during the traffic stop but returned fire, wounding the suspect.
