State Rep. Fred Smith loses re-election bid

Former Green Party member Fred Smith has lost his bid for re-election to the Arkansas House of Representatives — but this time, as a Democrat.

Smith lost in Tuesday's primary to Democrat Milton Nicks Jr. There is no Republican running for the House seat in the November election.

Smith is a former Harlem Globetrotter who was first elected to the House in 2010 as a Democrat, then resigned in 2011 after he was found guilty of felony theft of property delivered by mistake. He filed to run again in 2012 as a Democrat, but the party sued to keep him off the ballot. The criminal case was later dismissed.

Smith was later nominated as the Green Party's candidate and won his seat in the Legislature in 2012.
