Little Rock police Wednesday identified the off-duty officer who fatally shot a man who tried to rob him over the weekend.

Officer Scott Stovall, a motorcycle officer assigned to the city’s Northwest Division, is a 26-year-veteran of the force, Little Rock Police Department spokesman Lt. Sidney Allen said in a statement. The department declined to release the officer’s identification Monday, saying they were giving give him some time to cope with the ordeal before subjecting him to public attention.

Stovall was loading a bicycle into a sport utility vehicle late Sunday at the Vantage Point Apartments, 2300 Rebsamen Park Road, when he was accosted by an armed robber, whom he struggled with and then shot at least three times, police said.

The robber fired back once and fled to a waiting car, according to a police report.

The suspect, identified by department officials as Jovon Allen, 21, of Little Rock, died shortly after the shooting. Little Rock police previously spelled his first name as Juvon.
