LR officer who fired fatal shots to be named

Correction: Jovon Allen was shot and killed late Sunday night by an off-duty officer, Little Rock police said. Because of incorrect information from the Little Rock Police Department, Allen’s first name was misspelled in this article.

Little Rock police officials said they will release today the name of the off-duty Little Rock officer who fatally shot a man who tried to rob him over the weekend.

The identity of the officer, who was loading a bicycle into a sport utility vehicle late Sunday at the Vantage Point Apartments at 2300 Rebsamen Park Road when he was accosted by an armed robber, was withheld Monday by department officials.

The officer struggled with the robber, pulled his gun, and shot the man at least three times before the man fired back once and fled to a waiting car.

The suspect, identified by department officials as Juvon Allen, 21, of Little Rock, died shortly after the shooting.

Department spokesman Lt. Sidney Allen said that although there is no written policy or regulation governing the release of the name of an officer involved in a fatal shooting, there is oral policy that leaves the decision to release the officer's name to Chief Stuart Thomas.

The intent of the policy, according to Allen, is to give the officer some time to cope with the ordeal before subjecting him to public attention.
