Scattered storms possible over holiday weekend

Scattered thunderstorms are predicted across the state over the Memorial Day weekend, but few are expected to be severe, according to the National Weather Service in Little Rock.

John Robinson, a warning coordination meteorologist for the weather service, said the storms — which should start later tonight and continue through Sunday — will largely pose a "'threat of rain every once in awhile." Lightning will be the biggest concern for people who are participating in outdoor activities, he added, but damaging winds and hail are also possible with the stronger storms.

"Individual storms could produce 1/2 to 1 inch of rain, but such amounts are likely to be only over relatively small areas," Robinson said. "Memorial Day itself looks to have the lowest chance of thunderstorms."
