UALR hires deans for 2 new colleges

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has hired two new deans after conducting national job searches.

Shearle Furnish, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Youngstown State University in Ohio, will become founding dean of UALR's new College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences. Furnish will be paid $158,000 in the 2014-15 academic year.

Ann Bain, 60, interim dean of the UALR College of Science and chairman of the Department of Nursing, will become founding dean of the new UALR College of Education and Health Professions. Bain will earn $160,000 in the 2014-15 academic year.

They start July 1.

Furnish is a professor of English. He received a master's degree in 1978 and a doctorate in 1984 in English literature from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. His bachelor's degree in English literature comes from Transylvania University in Lexington in 1975.

Bain received a doctorate in higher education administration in 1998 from UALR and master's and bachelor's degrees in nursing from the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. Bain joined UALR in 1987 as an assistant professor of nursing before becoming a full professor. She formerly worked as a nurse at several hospitals in Little Rock and was assistant manager at Controlmed Medical Auditing.

Both have experience collaborating with different departments and colleges within their universities on different initiatives.
