In the garden

Q It seems we have these horrible thorny vines that grow at the base of my shrubs that get out of control if not constantly pulled up. They quickly grow upward into the bush and are very invasive. How do I treat these vines without damaging or killing the shrub? Most of them come up under my azaleas but in other areas as well.
