Ex-senator to talk on life in Congress

FAYETTEVILLE -- Former U.S. Sen. David Pryor will give a lecture today at the University of Arkansas about his experiences in Congress.

The lecture is the last of a three-part class offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UA on the "Dysfunctional World of Congress." Pryor will reflect on a time when members were better able to work together and explain what has happened since then.

Brinck Kerr, a UA political science professor, and Karen Sebold, a UA political science instructor, taught the first two sessions. They focused on the sometimes-strained relationship between the executive, legislative and judicial branches. Sebold discussed how Congress works in developing, discussing and debating a bill, and the role of lobbyists. Kerr spoke about gridlock.

Pryor, 79, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1966-1973 and in the U.S. Senate from 1979-1997. He was governor of Arkansas from 1975-1979. He is a member of the UA board of trustees.

Admission to the lecture -- which is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the UA Global Campus facility at 2 E. Center St. in Fayetteville -- is free and open to the general public.
