Rain possible in state through Thursday

A slow-moving low-pressure system in the west of the state might cause showers and thunderstorms throughout Arkansas most of the week, meteorologists say.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible from Tuesday through Thursday evening, National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist John Robinson said.

“Isolated storms could become severe during the afternoons and evenings, but we are not looking for any organized severe weather,” Robinson said in an email.

The weather system will meander around the region, with several rounds of rain expected and a chance of localized heavy rainfall, according to the National Weather Service's website.

Rainfall amounts could range from about 1 inch near the northern border of the state to 3 to 4 inches in the south, he said.

The past couple of days, an upper-level low-pressure system has kicked off big lines of thunderstorms in Texas, Robinson said.

“As these move south of Arkansas, they cut off some of the moisture that would otherwise flow northward into the state from the Gulf of Mexico,” he said. “This cuts down on our rainfall amounts, and we could see some instances of this occurring over the next couple of days.”
