A motorcyclist from Hot Springs was killed Tuesday when he tried to pass another vehicle and hit a Cadillac Escalade head-on, authorities said.

It happened about 8:10 a.m. on U.S. 270 near Starr Drive just east of Hot Springs.

Arkansas State Police say 49-year-old Johnny N. Newkirk was riding a 1989 Kawasaki motorcycle when he attempted to pass another vehicle in the center turn lane.

The motorcycle then hit the front of the Escalade, which was coming from the opposite direction and had stopped in the turn lane to turn left, police said.

Newkirk was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Hot Springs, where he died shortly after 10 a.m. The other driver was not hurt.

The death 143rd in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
