•–––––CLORENE “BIG MAW” CLARK, 88 of Sherwood passed away May 28, 2014. She was born December 3, 1925 to the late Floyd and Lola Haycraft in Kyser, Ark.

She is survived by her son Mike K. Trogden (Vickie) of Sherwood; one brother, Leon Haycraft of Greers Ferry, Ark.; two grandchildren, Matthew W. Trogden (Lorrie) of Maumelle and Preston K. Trogden (Christen) of Sherwood. She was also survived by two great-grandchildren, Nichlas W.K. Trogden and Carter M. Trogden, and one nephew, Gary Haycraft of Searcy, Ark. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Tommy F. Clark, one Aunt Lona Haycraft and sister-law, Virginia Haycraft and one Uncle Ves Haycraft.

Clorene was best known for her love of gardens which she tended to every spring. People would stop at her home just to see all the colors of flowers she had. Irises and roses was one of her favorite flowers to plant, with every color imaginable. She also raised a huge vegetable garden every year.

Clorene loved her grandchildren greatly and they were the light of her life and she looked forward to seeing each one and spending as much time with them as possible. Clorene “Big Maw” Clark will be greatly missed by each one who loved her.

Visitation will be held at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home Saturday May 31, 2014 at 1 p.m. with services to follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor B.C. Huston officiating. •–––––BETTY ANN RICE, 87, of Little Rock, calmly surrendered to the Lord’s call on May 26, 2014. Betty Ann Howse Rice was born August 15, 1926 in Poplar Grove, Ark., to Waymond and Tennessee Clemons. Betty professed a hope in Christ at an early age and served faithfully in her church. She was employed by the Little Rock Public School System.

•–––––BENTON — Dewey Edgar Morris, age 92, formerly of Little Rock and Benton, passed away on Thursday morning, May 29, 2014, at Hospice Home Care in Little Rock. He was born August 4, 1921, near Kingsland, Ark., the third child of Wiley and Ethel Morris. Dewey was a WWII veteran (U.S. Army/ Europe/1941-1945) and retired from the U.S. Air Force. In his retirement years, he enjoyed transporting cars for various dealerships and going to Mtn. View to play his fiddle and guitar with friends. Always beside him was his beloved wife of 51 years, Mary.

He is preceded by his wife, Mary Poe Morris, who passed away Jan. 20, 2014, his parents and stepmother, Rosie Morris Barentine, and four siblings: Odell Morris, Reba Morris, Roy Morris, and Earl Morris. He is survived by his son, Bill Poe of Marianna; daughters, Glenda Lesher (Bill) of North Little Rock, Mary Joyce Gaut (Robert) of Clinton, Pamela Cox (John) of Benton, and Karen Poe of Mabelvale; 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Also brothers, Von (Willene) Morris of Star City and James Ray Morris of Sheridan, and sisters, Reba Williams and Vera (James) Lanius of Grapevine, as well as extended family and friends who loved him.

She is preceded in death by her father, Paul Claypool, Jr. and brother, Paul. Patsy is survived by her mother, Modean Claypool of North Little Rock; children, Tina (Steven) Maitland, Ronnie (Kelly) Cotner, and Jerry (Shawna) Cotner; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; siblings, Lorine, Shirley, Ernestine, Violet, Allen, and Michael; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. •–––––HAZEN — Sue Carter passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Rebecca Susan Hawley was born to John and Virginia Hawley on Tillar, AR on March 5, 1926. A child of the depression, Sue learned early that joy came not from material things, but from within. She carried this with her throughout her life, finding joy in love of her family and friends and bringing joy all along the way.

Sue was All-State basketball in high school. As a senior, she was Arkansas Oratory Champion, and went on to place second in the National Oratory Competition, being the only female contestant. She graduated from the University of Arkansas with honors where she received a degree in Home Economics. She was 1948 Agri Queen and a Razorback Beauty. She was selected along with a small group of women to bring back the Epsilon Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha to the campus of WWII.

Sue loved to cook and entertain. One of her recipes for Cajun Okra over rice won a national contest, appearing in the cookbook, “American Buffet.” Known for her warm and encouraging nature, Sue was a beloved and respected leader in her community. She was an active and faithful member of Hazen United Methodist Church and took charge of organizing meals for services for over 30 years. Sue was an extraordinary bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Carter, of Hazen. For 57 years they shared their lives and raised 5 children; Becky Wakefield of Dallas, Texas; Alan Carter of New York, N.Y.; Dr. Virginia Lewis of Prairie Groove, Ark.; Dr. Niki Carter of Little Rock, Ark.; and Dr. Christi Bruening of Mt. Sterling, Ky. She was SuSu to her eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday May 30th for 5 to 7 p.m. at the Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen, Ark. Her memorial service is Saturday, May 31st at 10 a.m. at the Hazen United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Hazen United Methodist Church, The Hazen Cemetery Fund, or the American Heart Association.

•–––––RUSSELLVILLE — After living life to its fullest, Marshall Cole, 83, of Russellville, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at his home. He was born October 19, 1930, in Jackson, Miss., to Marshall E. and Ruth F. Cole. In 1944, Marshall moved to Little Rock and graduated from Little Rock High School in 1948. During the Korean War he served in the Army. He was an Eagle Scout and loved the outdoor sports including, golf, hunting, fishing, and had a love for camping with his family. Marshall’s first job was delivering newspapers on his horse named Chief, in The Heights of Little Rock. He graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree of science in Geology. He served on the boards for Potts Inn and the Intermodal Transportation. He began his career with the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1958 and after 30 years with Union Pacific Railroad he retired as assistant district engineer. After Marshall retired he perfected the art of story telling for all to hear. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Carol Cole Smith. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Cole, of Russellville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha and Barclay Berdan, of Fort Worth, Texas, Sara and Richard Daily, of Russellville; a sister, Betty Drake, of Little Rock; four grandchildren, David and Kristal Smith, of Russellville, Cathleen Berdan, of Austin, Texas, Laura and Daniel Brinker, of Conway, and Teddy Berdan, of Fort Worth, Texas; a great-granddaughter, Aubree Smith, of Russellville; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the Shinn Chapel, officiated by Rev. Gail Brooks, and under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville. •–––––RUSSELLVILLE — James Monroe Kolb, Jr. M.D. passed from this life on Wednesday, May 28, 2014. He was born on December 31, 1932 in Little Rock. He was 81 years old at the time of his passing.

Dr. Kolb was a man of many interests and great achievements. He was a pioneer in the field of orthopedic medicine in Arkansas and a leader in the Arkansas medical community. He was a great athlete, accomplished aviator and family patriarch. He had an unwavering loyalty to his family and friends and an inner goodness and strength that made people instantly and forever trust and respect him. He cherished his sons, his entire family and spending time with his loving and beautiful wife, Pat. His strength, integrity and kind nature made him a memorable and special force in the lives of so many. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.

Dr. Kolb graduated from Clarksville High School in 1951 where he was an All-State football player. He went on to play football at the University of Arkansas and was member of the famed “25 Little Pigs” team that won the Southwest Conference in 1954 and played in the Cotton Bowl.

Jim was so proud when his father, Dr. James Monroe Kolb, Sr. presented his doctor of medicine diploma to him at the University of Arkansas Medical School graduation in 1959. After completing his residency training and practicing in Tulsa, Okla., Jim became the first orthopedic surgeon in the entire River Valley in 1970. He fought hard to bring cutting edge orthopedic surgery techniques and instruments to the region. Through his skill and commitment to his practice, he successfully cared for his orthopedic patients in the region for over 25 years.

Dr. Kolb was committed to serving and leading the medical community. He was a lifelong member of the Arkansas Medical Society and served as president from 1994 to 1995. He also was a member of the Arkansas Orthopedic Society (Secretary-Treasurer 1980-81 and President 1981-82), the Mid-Central States Orthopedic Society, the Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Pope County Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the Southern Medical Association.

Dr. Kolb served as a flight surgeon in the Air National Guard, achieving a rank of Major before honorably leaving active duty in 1968. While serving, he developed a passion for aviation. He owned many types of planes and loved to fly whenever and wherever possible. Jim had many other interests, including skiing, horseback riding, scuba diving, sailing, history, genealogy, photography and rooting for his beloved Razorbacks. He regularly attended his university’s football and basketball games and was a Life Member of both the Arkansas Alumni Club and The”A” Club. He was extremely proud to have instilled in his grandchildren a love for the Hogs.

Jim was also a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the Masons (Franklin Lodge # 9, Clarksville, Ark.), a Charter Member of the WWII Museum, the Russellville Rotary Club, and the Johnson County Historical Society.

Surviving are his wife, Pat Murphy Kolb, and his three sons and their spouses, David Clifton, M.D. and Cindy Skinner Kolb of Little Rock, Joseph Franklin, J.D. and his wife Cindy Worthing Kolb, J.D. of Little Rock, and Richard Carl and Madeleine Kaplar Kolb of Palm Harbor, Fla. He is also survived by his three stepchildren and their spouses, Elizabeth Ward and Adam Cramer of Burbank, Calif., Van Thomas Ward and his wife Ann Richland of Pasco, Wash., and Margaret Ward Filbert and her husband Brent Filbert of Olathe, Kan. Other surviving family members are his niece, Reba Jane Callaway and her husband Joe Doug Driver, nephew, James Richard Callaway, M.D., grandchildren, Matthew David Kolb, Madison Paige Kolb, Mason Alexander Kolb, Caroline Emma Kolb, Emily Grace Kolb, Meghan Lilly Kolb, James Alexander Kolb, Zachary Hunter Kolb, and step-grandchildren, Quinlan Murphy Cramer, Clara Filbert and Taylor Filbert. Dr. Kolb was preceded in death by his parents, James Monroe Sr. M.D. and Reba Lois Garner, his oldest son, James “Jimmy” Monroe Kolb III, and sister, Martha Jane Kolb Callaway.

The family will receive friends in Russellville on Friday, May 30, 2014 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Humphrey Funeral Service. A visitation will be held in Clarksville at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 31, 2014 in the Kolb Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 212 North College St., and will be followed by a Life Celebration at 11 a.m. in the main sanctuary of the Church. He was a Navy Korean Veteran, member of Mercy United Pentecostal Church and retired after many years as a printer for the Arkansas Gazette.

•–––––PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. — Roy Harmon Hogan Jr., age 89 and resident of Pass Christian, Miss., died Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Roy was born on December 4, 1924, in Little Rock, Ark., to Roy Harmon Hogan, Sr. and Estelle Holland Hogan. Roy served in the U.S. Merchant Marines in World War II. In 1950, Roy joined Arkansas Power & Light starting in Little Rock, Ark., before moving to El Dorado, Ark., in 1969. He spent 40 years with AP&L, retiring in 1990 as Southern Division Manager. Roy was active in the community, serving on the civil service commission, Arkansas Hospital Association, Board of Directors-Warner Brown Hospital and Medical Center of South Arkansas, and Board of Trustees-American Hospital Association among others. He was also active in the church serving at First United Methodist Church in El Dorado, Ark., before chairing stewardship campaigns and serving on the vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pass Christian, Miss.

Roy is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bonnie Webb Hogan; daughters, Bonnie Richards of Birmingham, Ala. and Alison Gay Hogan of Pass Christian, Miss.; grandchildren, Christina Faught of Gulf Breeze, Fla. and Caleb Harmon Hogan of Boston, Mass.; and great-granddaughter, Kellen Faught of Gulf Breeze, Fla.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pass Christian.
