6 climbers missing on Mount Rainier

SEATTLE — A park spokeswoman says six climbers are missing on Mount Rainier and an aerial search has been launched for them.

Ranger Fawn Bauer says the six climbers are four clients and two guides from Alpine Ascents International. They were due from the mountain on Friday. When they did not exit, the climbing company notified the park.

She says the last contact the group had with the climbing company was on Wednesday. They were scheduled to summit Mount Rainier on Thursday.

Bauer says teams of climbing rangers were dispatched on Saturday near the Liberty Ridge area. The missing group was last contacted from 12,800 feet.

Details about the missing climbers were not immediately available.
