Arkansas man sentenced in child sex-assault case

FORT SMITH — One of two men who authorities say sexually assaulted a young girl has been sentenced to five years of probation.

The Southwest Times Record reported that 54-year-old Leon Russell of Van Buren pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault in exchanged for the suspended sentence. He must also register as a sex offender.

The other man accused in the case is wanted by authorities. A judge issued a warrant for 40-year-old David Todd of Fort Smith after he failed to show up for a mandatory appearance. He pleaded innocent to two counts of second-degree sexual assault in May.

Authorities say Todd took care of the minor and her siblings while her mother was in jail. Russell's relationship to the girl is unclear.

She tells authorities both men touched her inappropriately.
