Recycling slogan chosen in contest

“Keep Arkansas Natural: Recycle” is the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality’s new recycling slogan, unveiled this month.

The slogan was submitted by Tim Leigh, an engineer at Kimberly-Clark’s Conway facility, according to a department news release.

The department’s recycling committee chairman and officials with the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, the Arkansas Recyclers Association, the Arkansas Recycling Coalition and Keep Arkansas Beautiful selected Leigh’s entry from more than 200 entries made during a summer contest.

The slogan comes with a logo, which features the state of Arkansas outlined in green with grass in the southern portion of the state and a tree on top. It reads “Keep Arkansas Natural” in green type just above the grass and “Recycle” in larger white letters in the grass.

The logo can be viewed on the department’s website, www.adeq.state.ar.us, by clicking on a link for the logo on the right-hand side of the page in the “Hot Topics” section.

Phone app allows reports of hazards

Android smartphone owners can now download an app from the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality to file complaints and report environmental hazards in real time from their phones, according to a department news release.

The department is working on an app for iPhone owners to do the same thing, the release said. The current app is available through the Google Play Store.

Users will be asked to provide a complaint type, the county the hazard is located in and the location or driving directions to it. Users can also add photos and contact information.

People can already submit complaints online on the department’s website. The department receives about 400 complaints online every year.

“Our inspectors do a great job, but they can’t be everywhere,” department interim Director Ryan Benefield said in the release.
