Expansion of 2 Arkansas historic districts sought

FORT SMITH — Two Sebastian County historic districts already listed on the National Register of Historic Places may be expanded to include additional properties.

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program review board will consider 11 Arkansas properties in nine counties. The Southwest Times Record reported that they include proposed expansions of the Fishback Neighborhood Historic District in Fort Smith and the Chaffee Crossing Historic District for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Fishback neighborhood would include an expansion of properties, all built between 1895 and 1964. Fort Smith City Administrator Ray Gosack said the neighborhood's homeowners have long represented a sense of pride in maintaining their homes, which marks a qualifying factor for the area.

The Fishback neighborhood was platted and primarily developed between 1910 and 1922.
