Little Rock Zoo's jaguar exhibit reopens weeks after child fell in

The Little Rock Zoo's jaguar exhibit is open for visitors again about a month-and-a-half after a 3-year-old boy fell into the enclosure.

Susan Altrui, a spokesman for the zoo, said the exhibit reopened Tuesday after officials installed new signs that remind visitors to stay back from railings and provide a number to call to "instantly reach zoo staff" in emergencies.

Both of those steps were recommended in an internal review after the Oct. 10 fall.

The boy suffered critical injuries, including a skull fracture and minor puncture wounds, but was treated and released from Arkansas Children's Hospital. The review didn't determine if the injuries were caused by the fall or the big cats, though family members reported one jaguar bit into the boy's foot and clothing.

The jaguars — Agave and Cactus Jack — have remained in their pen during the closure but the viewing area from where the child fell had been closed. The same area also provides views into the lion and tiger exhibits.
