Highway crashes claim 4 lives

An 18-year-old Heber Springs man was killed and a 20-year-old Edgemont man was injured when the vehicle in which they were riding ran off the side of Arkansas 210 in Cleburne County and overturned Wednesday morning, the Arkansas State Police reported.

Police said Hunter Ahls of Heber Springs, a passenger in the 2014 Chevrolet, was killed and the driver, Frederick J. Peterson, 20, was injured in the accident, which occurred at 8:15 a.m. in the eastbound lane, east of the highway's intersection with Arkansas 110. Peterson was taken to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock.

The vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned in the eastbound ditch, according to the agency, which said the weather was clear and the road was dry at the time.

Police also reported that a three-vehicle accident Tuesday evening in Garland County left a Mabelvale man dead and three other people injured.

Michael Caffey, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene, a rest area on U.S. 70, after the 6:12 p.m. accident. Police said it was unclear whether Caffey was the driver or a passenger of a westbound 2008 Dodge that crossed the centerline and struck the front of an eastbound 2008 Suzuki driven by Dale E. Bates Jr., 23, of Jonesboro. Police said the Dodge began to spin after the collision, and its back bumper struck the rear of another westbound vehicle, a 2014 Chevrolet driven by Sarah Jordan Kennedy Smith, 30, of Alexander.

Smith and her passenger, 3-year-old Justin Cole Smith, also of Alexander, weren't injured, but Bates and his passenger, Julie Gauguery of Jonesboro, both were.

Police said the injured were taken to UAMS in Little Rock and CHI St. Vincent's Medical Center in Hot Springs. They said the road was dry and the weather was clear at the time of the accident.

State police also reported that a Benton man died Saturday after his eastbound vehicle left the roadway, collided with a tree and caught fire.

Conditions were clear and dry at the time of the wreck, state police reported.
