Nucor, Big River renew battle over new mill permit

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A company that received a state permit to build a new steel mill in eastern Arkansas says a federal judge should stop a challenge mounted by an existing nearby mill.

Big River Steel said Friday that allowing the challenge by Nucor Steel would be unfair.

The $1.3 billion mill is under construction near Osceola. Nucor has a mill near Blytheville. Nucor said in court papers last week that it should be allowed to claim in federal court that Big River Steel has violated the Clean Air Act.

Big River called the attempt a "collateral attack." In court papers filed Friday, Big River said that if a mill has a permit that was properly issued, certain portions of the Clean Air Act do not authorize new challenges.
