UALR sweeps South Alabama

UALR won its first Sun Belt Conference Tournament match since 2005 with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 26-24) sweep of South Alabama on Thursday at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos, Texas.

Senior Edina Begic led the Trojans with 13 kills. She hit .270 on 37 attempts. Junior Sonja Milanovic had 12 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Megan Mathis finished with 30 assists, 8 digs, 3 kills and 2 block assists.

UALR outhit South Alabama .265 to .010 and had a 10-4 advantage in blocks. The Trojans’ 22-match winning streak is the longest in the country after Stanford was beaten by Washington in four sets Wednesday night.

UALR will play Texas-Arlington at 4:30 p.m. today.

Arkansas State tops Louisiana-Lafayette

Arkansas State swept Louisiana-Lafayette 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-15) Thursday evening to advance to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the third consecutive season.

Sarah Kemp led the Red Wolves (21-9) with 10 kills, while Drew Jones had nine and Kariana Castanon-Hill had eight. Mallory Warrington added 25 assists and 13 digs for ASU, and Markie Schaedig led the team with 19 digs.

ASU will face Texas State at 6:30 tonight.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

NLR wins opener at Rumble on Ridge

KeVaughn Allen hit two free throws with :02 remaining in double overtime Thursday to give North Little Rock a 69-67 season-opening victory over Arlington, Tenn., in the first round of the Rumble on the Ridge in Forrest City.

North Little Rock, the defending tournament and Class 7A state champion, advances to play Bossier City, La., in today’s semifinals.

Allen, a 6-3 senior guard, finished with a team-high 28 points, while junior Adrian Moore scored 16 and Jarvis Ricks had 13. Arlington fell to 2-4.
