Arkansas team starts poorly

Arkansas finds itself next-to-last in the 52-team field after Tuesday’s first round of the USGA Men’s State Team Championship at French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind.

The team of Wes McNulty, Drew Greenwood and Trey Schaap shot a 15-over 159 and is four strokes ahead of last-place Alaska. Iowa shot a 3-under 141 to grab the first-round lead of the three-day event.

Greenwood of Hot Springs led Arkansas with a 6-over 78. The 2013 ASGA player of the year was 2 under after his first four holes but made the turn at 1-over 37 as the team started on the back nine of the Pete Dye-designed course. A triple bogey 7 on the par-4 sixth hole led to Greenwood’s 5-over 41 on the front nine.

McNulty of White Hall, the 2014 ASGA player of the year, had a 5-over 41 on his opening nine holes and made bogey on five of his first six holes on his second nine leading to a 9-over 81. He made his only birdie Tuesday when he made a 2 on the par-3, 200-yard fourth hole.

Schaap’s 15-over 87 was not taken as only a team’s top two scores are counted. Schaap made the turn at 7 over and posted an 8-over 44 on his second nine. He had six pars and no birdies in his first round.
