If Michigan boots AD, Long could get a call

Jeff Long, University of Arkansas athletic director, gives a few remarks Friday, Aug. 22, 2014 at the 2014 Arkansas Football Kickoff Luncheon at the Northwest Arkansas Convention Center in Springdale.
Jeff Long, University of Arkansas athletic director, gives a few remarks Friday, Aug. 22, 2014 at the 2014 Arkansas Football Kickoff Luncheon at the Northwest Arkansas Convention Center in Springdale.

Michigan students showed up at the on-campus home of President Mark Schlissel to demand the firing of Athletic Director Dave Brandon.

More than 9,000 students, staff members and alumni have called for his firing after the mishandling of quarterback Shane Morris, who suffered a head injury in Saturday's loss to Minnesota but was put back in the game without being cleared by the medical team.

Of course, the bulk of the fault for that falls on the shoulders of Coach Brady Hoke, who was already under fire.

If Brandon is fired, don't be surprised if Michigan doesn't at least talk to Arkansas' Jeff Long, who was an assistant athletic director there a few years ago.

Long's resume is getting more impressive each year. It includes being the chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee, and he was applauded nationally for the way he handled the firing of Bobby Petrino.

The Central Arkansas Boys and Girls Clubs will honor Mike Anderson, the Arkansas Razorback men's basketball coach, with its 2014 Leader of the Year Award at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the Pennick Boys and Girls Club in Little Rock.

Anderson is going into his fourth year with the Razorbacks, and when he took over the program it had lost a scholarship because of low Academic Progress Rate scores.

This past spring Anderson had five players graduate, and the basketball team is expecting a perfect score of 1.000 when its spring APR numbers come out.

Former Razorback Pat Bradley will introduce Anderson.

This is a major fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs, which have five clubs in central Arkansas and more than 10,000 youngsters among their memberships.

Anthony Wunder is paying dearly for an apparently drunken stunt he pulled Saturday when he went down onto the playing field during Ohio State's victory over Cincinnati.

First Wunder was slammed to the ground by Buckeyes assistant strength and conditioning coach Anthony Schlegel, a former linebacker (and it showed), and now he has lost his scholarship.

The fourth-year engineering major was on an Evans Scholarship, one of the top programs in the country for caddies. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that officials have started procedures to remove his scholarship that covers tuition and housing.

This is a periodical prediction, and it can change, but if the four-team college football playoff field was announced right now, it would probably be Oklahoma, Oregon, Florida State and the winner of the Auburn/Alabama game.

That would leave a very upset -- and deservedly so -- Baylor and Notre Dame out of the mix.

Right now there are 17 undefeated schools, but the meat of the schedule is just beginning for everyone and 13 of the undefeated teams will play an undefeated school during the month of October.

It seems rather amazing that Michigan fans actually seem to believe Jim Harbaugh would leave the San Francisco 49ers to coach his alma mater.

The former Michigan quarterback has a base salary of $5 million a year, plus incentives.

Yes, there was talk of him being traded to coach Cleveland, but he's the one who nixed the deal.

The advantage to college coaching is the hours. College coaches are limited by the NCAA on how many hours they can spend with athletes. There are also periods where they are not allowed to have contact with recruits.

On the other hand, NFL coaches don't recruit. They get their players from the draft or through trades.

Successful NFL coaches don't generally go back and coach colleges, and most of the college coaches who try the NFL end up back at the college level.

Harbaugh is probably about as happy as he can be.
