Thousands show for Race for the Cure in LR

Thousands of runners, walkers and supporters filled the streets of downtown Little Rock on Saturday for the city's annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Race chairman Ashley Hurst said watching the activities from the side lines was unreal for her.

“I really don’t have words. I can’t believe it’s already here,” Hurst said.

The Little Rock chapter of the Race for the Cure organization raised over a million dollars last year alone and spread the funds among 21 organizations, Hurst said. The Little Rock Race for the Cure — in its 21st year and the fourth largest of its kind in the country — attracted nearly 40,000 people this year.

The competitive Race for the Cure 5K started at 7:30 a.m., and the categories for winners were divided into men and women as well as survivors.

Survivors Lynn O’Neal, Michelle Huff, and Ashley Stephens placed first, second and third, respectively.

The winners in the women's category were Leah Thorvilson in first place, Tia Stone in second and Caitlin Anderson in third.

Gannon White placed first, Christian Malloy placed second and Jordan Briner placed third in the men's category.
