Special teams help Harrison to victory over LR Christian

LITTLE ROCK -- Special teams and defense propelled the Harrison Goblins (2-2, 1-1 5A-West) to victory Friday when they stormed into Little Rock and defeated the Little Rock Christian Warriors (3-2, 1-1 5A-West) 43-21.

Harrison raced to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter, due in large part to a successful onside kick following their first touchdown drive and an interception and 66-yard touchdown run by Silas Huskey, his first of three interceptions for the night. The Goblins also found success with two onside kicks during the first quarter.

Harrison Coach Chad Harbison said he knew the Warriors "were very explosive and very good on offense. We felt like we needed to be able to sustain some drives and use some clock and keep their offense on the sideline as much as we could."

The Goblins continued rolling in the second quarter, extending their lead to 29-0 before Little Rock Christian finally scored with a little over a minute left in the first half to make the score 29-7. The Warriors only recorded 80 yards in the first half and were unsuccessful in the run game, registering no yards on the ground.

The Warriors then took to the air, scoring immediately in the third quarter with a 61-yard touchdown pass from Brooks Boshears, but they were never able to take the lead, as Harrison's offense would go on to score 14 more points before the end of the game.

"Our kids played hard," Warriors Coach Buck James said. "There wasn't any give-up in us and we can build off of that. We still control our own destiny at this point and I expect this conference to be wide open all season long."

Quarterback Brock Humphrey finished with 168 yards and three touchdowns through the air, completing 18 of his 31 pass attempts, while also adding 53 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He led his team to a 324 yard offensive showing, with 168 coming through the air and 156 on the ground.

Boshears finished with 269 yards and three touchdowns through the air, but also threw four interceptions throughout the course of the game. The Warriors finished the game with 296 yards of total offense, but only gained 27 yards on the ground all game.

Quarterback J.B. Minix accounted for 6 touchdowns and 239 total yards to lead Maumelle (4-0-1, 2-0 5A-West) to a runaway win over Clarksville (0-5, 0-2). Minix rushed for 133 yards on 8 carries and scored on runs of 20, 44 and 15 yards. He threw for another 106 yards on 5 of 7 passes and tossed scoring passes of 32 and 54 yards to Nick Ingram and 22 yards to Braylon Waits. Jacob Kennard added a 26-yard field goal for Maumelle. Clarksville’s lone score came on an 11-yard pass from Luke Stumbaugh to Hall Frost.
