Heavy rain is predicted throughout the weekend in Arkansas beginning Friday night, forecasters say. Rain is expected to continue through Sunday when a new weather system makes its way into the state.

A threat of heavy rain and some severe thunderstorms are forecast for this weekend throughout the state, meteorologists said Thursday.

John Robinson, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Little Rock, said the heaviest amounts of rain will remain to the north of Arkansas through midday Friday.

A slow-moving cold front will then make its way southward into the state Friday night and Saturday, he said.

A lull in rainfall will occur Saturday night into Sunday, he said, but on Monday a new weather system will make its way into the state, with another threat of heavy rain.

A few severe thunderstorms are not out of the question Friday evening and Monday. The main severe weather threats would be damaging winds and hail around an inch in diameter, according to Robinson.

He added that flash flood watches will likely be issued.
