Two Hot Springs women were jailed early Thursday morning after a jury found them guilty of charges stemming from a fatal dog attack in November, officials said.

Brande Coy, 50, and her daughter, Emily Coy, 25, were charged in the death of Joan Kappen, 75, who was killed by the Emily's bullmastiff mix while she was walking in Hot Springs Village, Saline County Prosecutor Rebecca Bush said.

The two women went to trial this week and the jury deliberated for a little over three hours Wednesday before they found both women guilty, Bush said.

Brande Coy, who was home at the time of the dog attack, was arrested for manslaughter, but her charge was reduced to negligent homicide, Bush said. She was sentenced to 60 days in jail and a year probation. Emily Coy was found guilty of an unlawful dog attack, owning a vicious dog and keeping it unrestrained, Bush said. She was sentenced to 120 days in jail and one year of probation.

Both women were booked into the Saline County jail a little before 3 a.m.

Emily Coy had the dog euthanized at an animal shelter shortly after the attack.
